Evacuation support for education

As the nominated responsible person for the enforcement of safety measures at your school, college or university, it is your job to cover all bases during the emergency planning process. In addition to ensuring that fire drills are carried out regularly, it is also crucial to determine the amount of evacuation equipment required for pupils, students, staff and visitors who may be on the premises at the time of an emergency.

Young and able-bodied students are not the only individuals that will be on the property. You should also consider that parents and grandparents will visit the educational facility for recitals and open houses, some of whom may have certain mobility issues, some staff members may also be mobility-restricted.

Additionally, what happens when an individual - pupil or not - is injured and has temporary mobility issues, for example a pupil recovering from a sporting injury who is still on crutches, what is the quickest and easiest way of evacuating that individual safely during an emergency?

So, if there is a fire - or a different type of emergency occurs - you want to be sure that everyone in the school or university building can be vacated safely using the correct evacuation equipment for mobility-restricted individuals.

It is also important to note that it is not the fire brigade’s responsibility to evacuate people from your school or university buildings in the event of an emergency. It is their job to deal with the emergency directly, so able-bodied staff members should be trained to use evacuation equipment such as escape evacuation chairs to help mobility-restricted pupils, students, staff and visitors to vacate the school or university property safely.
